Gerookte Geitenkaas
oil on wood, 8x8"
From the Cheese Portraits series.
This little beauty of a wedge was brought to me by my friend Paul visiting from Rotterdam. Paul asked if there were any cheeses I may want to try from Holland and I requested anything made of raw milk. His gift was this delicious gem of goats milk cheese that's been aged and smoked for three days. The smoked flavor is only a subtle addition to the rich, nutty goat gouda that is hard to explain; it's just a savory thing to relish as your eyes roll back.
Thanks Paul, I had fun painting (and eating) it!
While I can't even begin to pronounce it, "Gerookte Geitenkaas" simply translates to "smoked goat cheese"
