Blue Jay

Blue Jay, original artwork by Mike Geno

Blue Jay was a happy discovery at the cheese shop. I stopped by the Reading Terminal Market, in Philadelphia, because it's a magical place and I was hoping to find a new blue for a blue cheese party. The counter at Down Town Cheese did not disappoint me! This one caught my eye because it has juniper berries in it!

The award winning blue from Deer Creek Cheese in Sheboygan, Wisconsin, claims this to be a "quintuple cream blue" ! Each batch has a ten-gallon can of cream added which makes it super mellow and buttery. The crushed juniper berries wonderfully compliment the blue strain that is balanced and savory and not at all what I consider to be "perfume-y". The botanical influence is simply perfect, making this a unique and delicious blue that I've not experienced anywhere else. After painting over 60 blue cheeses, I am thrilled to find a new and unique love.
