Sourdough
oil on wood, 12x16"
This is a side view of a beautiful loaf by the head baker at La Colombe, in Fishtown near me in Philadelphia. I met John McGrath and he gave me this great looking loaf. I felt the need to paint with a piece cut from it but then fell (entranced?) in love with the texture and all those oval holes. I had no choice then, but to spend the entire day paint those cavernous holes with lots of thick paint.
I feel like this is also a nod of respect to one of my favorite painters, a Scottish artist named Derrick Guild. He's got a wonderful body of work. His bread paintings initially caught my eye. Oh, what I would do for one of his paintings.
