Family Loaf

Family Loaf

Series: Bread

Description: This painting was a commission for a gift of two sons to their father who taught them how to bake this loaf. It's a white/barley/rye mix made with a sourdough that their father had begun baking over a decade ago. The technique is a hodgepodge that grew from Tartine Bakery's (in San Francisco) long-rise, wet-dough method. "we bake this bread 1-3 times a week, so it's definitely a staple food." I am always a fan of how food connects friends and family.

Ciabatta

Ciabatta

Series: Bread

Description: This Ciabatta loaf was something I fell in love with when I stopped in at the local bakery. La Colombe, in the fishtown area of Philadelphia, known for their coffee, makes wonderful food, has a rum distillery and best of all, fresh bread baked daily. This one has a surface of a beautiful landscape and it hovers and glows with this deep purple background. It was fun to paint larger than most of my other paintings.

Sourdough

Sourdough

Series: Bread

Description: This is a side view of a beautiful loaf by the head baker at La Colombe, in Fishtown near me in Philadelphia. I met John McGrath and he gave me this great looking loaf. I felt the need to paint with a piece cut from it but then fell (entranced?) in love with the texture and all those oval holes. I had no choice then, but to spend the entire day paint those cavernous holes with lots of thick paint. I feel like this is also a nod of respect to one of my favorite painters, a Scottish artist named Derrick Guild. He's got a wonderful body of work. His bread paintings initially caught my eye. Oh, what I would do for one of his paintings.

Sesame Rye Sourdough

Sesame Rye Sourdough

Series: Bread

Description: This is another local area bakery gift of the baker, John McGrath, from La Colombe in the Fishtown area of Philadelphia. I've fallen in love with his talent and luxury of having such quality breads within walking distance of my studio. I was instantly enamored by the sesame-covered loaf on display. John was happy to let me have it. In my studio I couldn't help but once again be drawn to painting the view of the cut bread with all it's eyes and beautiful pattern. It was fun to include the sesame crust. I think I'll have to do more!
