Series: Cheese Portraits

Description: This cube-shaped blue is an internal and external blue from indianapolis, indiana. When I saw Laura Davenport at cheese event in Philadelphia, she handed me a bag of her cheeses with a smile. This was a generous and wonderful gift. Tulip Tree Creamery has only been around since 2014, but it's made quite a splash in the cheese world; winning much acclaim and lots of awards for their beautiful square cheeses. I was happy to finally get my hands on some and take it into the studio to have some fun. I started cutting up this square wheel and was reminded of the art of another artist, an insane guy named Tom GrGiesier. Tom makes some incredible, quirky and wonderful still life paintings of cut-up and stacked subjects. I absolutely love his work, so really, this painting of a reassembled square was inspired by Tom. Thanks Tom. Tulip Tree Creamery makes their incredible cheeses with Milk from Lot Hill Dairy, sourced certified humane milk from non-GMO grains & hay and hormone-antibiotic free happy cows. I had this wheel for a while and was pleased the taste was still very buttery, mellow and rich creamy blue with a natural rind with some bluing that, with some age, started becoming multi-colored like a beautiful stone you find and feel compelled to put in your pocket. After a long summer hot day in the studio, it was ripe for eating: fudgey and flavorful and just about fainting; the stack fell over in the last half hour of my painting (shrug).

Ameribella

Ameribella

Series: Cheese Portraits

Description: This is from cheesemaking husband and wife team, Leslie Jacobs and Matthew Birchford, of Jacobs and Brichford Cheese. It's a taste of Northern Italy by way of Connersville, indiana inspired by Taleggio, the Italian washed rind classic. Originally named Arabella, this cheese underwent a slight name change; it's named after Matthew's great grandmother, whose name was America Arabella. To honor her they combined her two names and came up with the Ameribella, which also has the unique quality of honoring this cheese's American terroir and Italian origins. *info was found at cheesenotes.com - one of my favorite cheese places online. Thanks cheesenotes !

Julianna

Julianna

Series: Cheese Portraits

Description: Capriole is an indiana goat creamery that pioneered artisan cheese making in its region over 25 years ago, and renowned cheese-maker, Judy Schad, now has a herd of more than 500 goats. Actually this aged goat cheese is named after a special intern, a young Hungarian woman named Julianna Sedli. Sedli had the insight to make a small version of their Tomme and also rolling the cheese in herbes de Provence. I almost missed my first chance to paint a cheese from indiana as this small quarter of a wheel wedge was all that was left by the time I arrived in the cheese shop. After tasting a sliver off the wedge, I decided then it was worthy of a double portrait. The dramatic "formal wear" background lends to the mirror-imaged portraits that reminded me of a bow tie. That was inspired by the flavor and consistency of this cheese is beautifully elegant and classy.

O'Banon

O'Banon

Series: Cheese Portraits

Description: This is one of the earliest (1988) cheeses made by one of the earlier pioneer American farmstead cheesemakers, Judy Schad at Capriole in indiana. This round is wrapped in chestnut leaves soaked in Woodford Reserve Bourbon then plastic sealed so that it stays fresh, tangy and though a lil boozy, it remains light and citrusy and very silky and soft. It's amazing really. Originally named "Banon" after the French goat cheese round that it was modeled after. It was later renamed "O'Banon" after ex-governor and friend of the farm, Frank O'Bannon passed away. I especially loved unwrapping this six ounce, 3 inch round and finding the leaves imprinted on the soft rind, even leaving traces of some of the color.
