This naturally leavened bread comes from a local bakery, Mighty Bread Company in South Philadelphia. Every once in a while I get that urge to focus on the texture and pattern found in a cross-section of a beautiful bread. Sourdough is especially fun, with all those air holes swirling in various directions that reminds me of a lava lamp. The simplicity of sourdough; water, flour, whole wheat flour, sourdough starter and salt is to me, a long day of mediation in the studio. I aimed to approach this a bit bigger than some of my past bread paintings and enjoyed getting lost in the zone, the bread zone.
