From the Chef Plates series.

When Zig Zag BBQ opened up in my neighborhood a few years ago, I'll admit, I wasn't overly excited.  I didn't have a regular bbq habit.  There's decent offerings in the city and I rarely made them a destination.  Once I tried Zig Zag's, however, all that changed.  Sure, I love to support my local neighbors, but Matt Lang has more than just an incredible bbq resume, he's SO East Kensington.  He has had the most entertainingly absurd social media feed in the area, but once his instagram account got hacked and deleted, he started over. If you follow him, you will smile for a moment.  If you eat his food, you'll smile for days.

I've been wanting to paint something of his for ages, and Matt chose this sandwich because I believe it's the core of what makes zigzag extraordinary, and not just because he makes every sandwich look this great.

It was so much fun to capture the strata of tender, spiced brisket slabs piled atop pickles and a thick slice of onion with that added tangy mustard and bbq sauce oozing out from under the Merzbacher bun.  If you need to try the best sandwich in the hood, don't wait any longer; it's perfection.
