Pink Peep 2
Series: Foodie
Description: This tiny painting was part of a larger series of ready-to-eat subjects. The marshmallow peep is something I grew up with and one's opinion on how soft or stiff it should be is debatable.

5 Peeps
Series: Foodie
Description: This is one of my earlier food paintings that seemed a natural transition between my painting of toys and kitsch objects and my new interest in painting food memories, especially local foods from pennsylvania. Marshmallow Peeps are something I grew up with and I especially loved the idea of a wide composition of a whole row still stuck together, right out of the box.

Krimpets
Series: Foodie
Description: This Tastykake Co. "Krimpets" still life was a commission from a Philly food fan who lives in CA. In this composition, I decided to represent the two kinds we grew up with: butterscotch and jelly. They're one of the food-nostalgic trips I can still take and not be disappointed by modernized corner cutting.

Croissant and Chocolates
Series: Foodie
Description: This was a fun commission for a foodie that was soon likely to depart the Philadelphia area. She wanted a Metropolitan Bakery croissant but she also fell in love with the locally made chocolates. I was glad to combine them into one painting, especially after she dropped off a couple boxes of chocolates made by Eclat and John & Kira's. My job is quite satisfying.

Smores Cake
Series: Foodie
Description: I met local food fanatic, Rebecca Canna, a few years ago and bonded over our shared love of cheese. Since then she's become obsessed with baking as well. We talked about her beautiful layered cakes for over a year as a painting idea. They can be seen on instagram (you should see yourself: @the_lorelei_bake_shop and www.theloreleibakeshop.com. The Lorelei Bake Shop specializes in custom, buttercream cakes and she brought over one of her favorites! Finally we were able to coordinate our busy schedules and Rebecca was generous enough to bake me one of her delicious masterpieces and bring it over to my studio. This studio model was a stunning challenge and once it was cut you see how complicated it was to construct. She describes it as a twist on the childhood indulgence, this Smores Cake with a Strawberry Compote combines graham cake with chocolate ganache, marshmallow, and vanilla-bean swiss meringue buttercream. The torched marshmallow meringue frosting was like a see of amber tentacles and I just knew the background color had to be this complimentary blue green. It was a long but fun and delicious day in the studio. The rare occasion of such a fun model had me convinced I should make this a bit bigger than usual and it pops off my studio wall like it belongs in Pee Wee's Playhouse!

Northern Spy
Series: Foodie
Description: It was a surprising pleasure to paint an apple, possibly for the first time (I really cant recall ever painting one before!). A friend and cheese maker commissioned this specific apple that his grandmother and mother both insist on using for their pies as he continues this family tradition himself. I was glad to live near a local, neighborhood fishtown shop called Riverwards Produce, owned by a man passionate about apples. Thanks Vince, for being a crazy vegan and making the neighborhood better.

Troegenator and Aged Gouda
Series: Foodie
Description: Having been commissioned to create this still life painting for Troegs Brewing Co. in Hershey, PA, was quite an honor. Their goal was to have me paint a double portrait of cheese and beer with aged Gouda which pairs perfectly with their Troegenator Double Bock for their collection and also to promote and inspire submissions to their "Art of Troegs" annual contest. Troegs Independent brewing welcomes Troegs-inspired art from the 11 lucky states they distribute to. The top winners get major cash awards, a trip with accommodations and honors at their big reception/party at the Brewery in Hershey Park, PA. The visit alone is quite a treat, their tour is wonderful and the cafeteria fit for foodies. It's pretty much heaven. The Troegenator Double Bock pairs perfectly with an extra aged Gouda and for this painting I reached out to my friends at The Farm at Doe Run, not too far from Troegs. They were happy to give me something as good or better than a five year aged Gouda; they sent me a spectacular wedge of "St Malachi Reserve". This cheese is an award winning gouda style cheese that is decadent. While it's only aged for just under two years, it tastes better than a five year Gouda. It's good to pair two of my favorite pennsylvania indulgences!
