Pitchfork Cheddar, original artwork by Mike Geno

Long, long ago in 2010, I painted my first "cheese portrait" and it was a wedge of Caerphilly made in Wales by the Trethowan Brothers. Years later, on an incredible Cheese Journey's tour, I was able to meet Todd and Maugan Trethowan. Since then, the brothers moved the family farm to Somerset, England, within five miles of the town of Cheddar.. In their new home, they began making this incredible creamy textured and dense, sharp and buttery flavored, organic award winning clothbound cheddar in 2018.

Pitchfork is an organic, raw cows milk cheddar that embraces the local terroir and it complies with all the standards of Artisan Somerset Cheddars. It is named after the actual pitchforks used to mix salt into the curds.

Ever since it first hit the market this cheddar has proven itself among the giants of Somerset, such as Montgomery's, Westcomb and Keen's and won multiple awards and many of them "gold". I decided for this painting, to enjoy a sort of "double portrait' with the ground and background being gold, reflective boards. I came across a box of gold foil cake trays and couldn't resist having some fun. I certainly can think of few cheeses more worthy of a golden stage!
